About:
The canning industry exists in Calheta village of São Jorge Island, since the 40’s of last century, being reactivated by the Municipality of Calheta, with the founding of Santa Catarina – Indústria Conserveira S.A., on April 5th, 1995. In 2009, the company was acquired by the Azorean Government, through Lotaçor – Serviço de Lotas dos Açores S.A., after having spent a period in the hands of the local business group “José Leovigildo”.
Santa Catarina’s factory is located by the sea shore, in the Fajã Grande of Calheta village, in São Jorge Island, of the Azores archipelago.
It’s a company dedicated exclusively to the manufacture of canned tuna, which strives for quality, allying technology to ancestral artisanal methods, with the factory being, currently, the main private employer of São Jorge Island, with 139 members, 19 male and 120 female. For a small island or so-called from the periphery, it’s significant the number of jobs that has created, which demonstrates the authentic social responsibility project.
Santa Catarina’s product is made with tuna captured by the Pole & Line method (artisanal fishing method), a method that selects the best specimens, safeguarding the species preservation and respecting the marine ecosystem, protecting dolphins, which earned from the non-governmental Earth Island Institute the certifications “Dolphin Safe” and “Friend of the Sea”, being the first fishing method of the world achieving these awards; a true example of sustainability.
This young industry bet on quality, essentially labouring fresh tuna caught in the Azorean sea, which is then transported to the factory where it is boiled, cut/trimmed and placed in cans, by hand, where the spices are added later (olive oil, water, vegetable oil), sealed in the cans and ready for commercialization.
